Perkins and Hackett's final showdownThe 1500m freestyle was a race for all Australians. Youngster Grant Hackett challenged his idol Kieren Perkins, reigning 1992 and 1996 Olympic champion, for the 1500m crown. Thorpedo Grabs 400m Gold in 2000Australia's Ian Thorpe wins the men's 400m freestyle final at the Sydney Olympics and breaks his own world record in the process.

Sydney 2000 magic moments podcastsTo commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games nine podcasts have been created to celebrate some of the finest moments at the Games. The smashing guitars raceThe Americans were undefeated in the 4x100m freestyle relay until Michael Klim, Chris Fydler, Ashley Callus and Ian Thorpe swam one of the best relays in history. Klim opened for the Aussies and broke the world 100m freestyle record. After strong swims from Fydler and Callus enters Thorpe- who broke his swimsuit and made it on deck just in time for the race. Thorpe mowed down Gary Hall Jnr in the final 25 metres and the Aussies smashed the world record. They celebrated in response to Hall Jnr's quip that the USA would 'smash them like guitars'. Young Thorpedo launchesIan Thorpe aged just 17 won Australia's first gold medal at Sydney 2000. Thorpe led from the start in the 400m freestyle and smashed his own world record in front of a booming home crowd. This set the stage for the men's 4x100m freestyle relay later in the night.
