Fosbury FlopMexico 1968: Dick Fosbury of the USA clears the bar in the high jump competiton with his dramatic new jumping style. Under his influence the style changed from the action of a run in, with a spring off the left foot to straddle the right leg and body over the bar to the action of a run in, a take off from the left foot to pivot on the right so that his back is to the bar as the athlete rises, flicks his legs to clear the bar and fall on their back. He won with a leap of 2.24 metres and within ten years the majority of the world's jumpers had adopted the Fosbury Flop, as it became known.
