Political ObstaclesBerlin 1936: The marathon was won by Kitei Son of Japan, who would have preferred to be known as Sohn Kee-Chung of Korea, but at the time his country was occupied by the Japanese. In 1948 Sohn carried the Korean flag in the Opening Ceremony of the Games in London and, at the age of 76 it was Sohn who, bounding on to the track in Seoul, brought the Olympic torch into the arena for the opening of the 24th Olympiad.
